Governance

The Waimārama Surf Life Saving Club Inc is an incorporated society and registered charity.

The primary objective of the Club is to promote, develop, and deliver Surf Life Saving as a charitable service and prevent drowning and injury of those swimming and undertaking activities at Waimārama Beach, and at other locations as determined by the Club for the safety and recreation of the general public.

In summary, the Club does this by seeking and promoting membership of the club; being a member of Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) and promoting the rules of SLSNZ; encouraging and promoting Surf Life Saving as a sport; developing and training our lifeguards, instructors, competitors, officials, coaches, managers, and other personnel involved in Surf Life Saving; liaising and co-operating with other organisations to develop, encourage, and promote water safety messages and programmes; and at all times acting on behalf of, and in the interests of its Members and Surf Life Saving.

The club is governed by a Board who are elected by its members at the AGM.  The club’s constitution details the Board is to be formed under the following key functions:

  • Chairperson
  • Director of Lifeguarding
  • Director of Education
  • Director of Surf Sports
  • Director of Juniors
  • Director of Powercraft
  • Director of Property
  • Director of Funding and Sponsorship; and
  • Appointed General Directors, up to four of which two can be Independent (non member) Directors.

At the AGM, members also elect the club President.  The President as an Officer of the Club, performs the important role of being the liaison of the volunteer base and professional structure of the Club should problems arise.  Accordingly, while the President may attend Board meetings, the position has no power to vote at the Board meetings.  The President chairs the AGM and other general/special meetings held with members.
